What Affects Lumber Pricing?

Species & Rarity

Old-growth redwood and black walnut command premium prices due to scarcity. Common species like pine and fir are more affordable but still valuable when reclaimed.

Grade & Condition

Clean, straight lumber with minimal defects grades higher. Structural-grade beams are worth more than nail-pocked framing. Character marks can add or reduce value depending on the intended use.

Dimensions

Wider and longer boards are rarer and more valuable. Timbers over 8x8 inches and boards over 12 inches wide carry a premium. Standard dimensional lumber (2x4, 2x6) is priced competitively.

Volume & Quantity

Bulk orders receive automatic discounts. Contractors ordering 500+ board feet save 10-15%. Truckload orders (2,000+ board feet) receive our best per-foot pricing.

Processing Level

Rough-sawn lumber is priced lower. Planing, sanding, tongue-and-groove milling, and kiln drying add value. Fully finished boards cost more but save you time and equipment.

Provenance & History

Documented origin stories add value. Lumber from historic LA buildings, notable structures, or verified old-growth forests carries a premium for clients who value authenticity.

Volume & Bulk Orders

Whether you are a general contractor, interior designer, or furniture maker, our bulk pricing tiers are designed to make reclaimed lumber cost-effective for projects of any scale.

What Our Clients Say

We have been sourcing reclaimed wood from LA Lumber for over three years. Their grading is consistent, their pricing is fair, and they always deliver on time. They are our go-to for every project that calls for authentic reclaimed material.

Marcus T.

General Contractor, West LA

I had 4,000 board feet of old-growth fir from a warehouse demo and they gave me a better price than anyone else I called. Pickup was scheduled for the next morning and the check arrived two days later. Extremely professional.

Jennifer K.

Demolition Project Manager

The walnut slabs I bought for my dining table and kitchen island were stunning. The team helped me pick the right pieces, milled them to my exact specs, and delivered them wrapped and protected. Worth every penny.

David R.

Homeowner, Pasadena

Environmental Impact

Every board foot of reclaimed lumber you buy or sell through us is a board foot that does not end up in a landfill and does not require a new tree to be harvested. The environmental benefits are significant and measurable.

Wood in landfills decomposes anaerobically, producing methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period. By diverting wood from landfills, we prevent these emissions while preserving the carbon already sequestered in the timber.

Reclaimed lumber also eliminates the energy-intensive processes of logging, transporting raw timber, and operating sawmills. Studies show that reclaimed wood uses approximately 13 times less energy than harvesting and processing virgin lumber.

Safety & Compliance

We take safety and regulatory compliance seriously at every stage of the buy-sell process.

Lead Paint Testing

All lumber sourced from pre-1978 structures is tested for lead paint. Contaminated material is safely separated and disposed of according to EPA and Cal/OSHA regulations. We never sell lead-contaminated wood.

Metal Detection

Every piece passes through industrial metal detectors to find hidden nails, screws, bolts, and other fasteners. This protects your equipment and ensures clean, safe material for your projects.

Pest Inspection

Incoming lumber is inspected for termites, powder post beetles, and other wood-boring insects. Infested material is either heat-treated to eliminate pests or rejected from our inventory.

Moisture Content

We measure and document moisture content using calibrated pin-type meters. Air-dried material is stickered and stored properly. Kiln drying is available to bring moisture below 8% for interior use.

Chemical Treatment Screening

We screen for CCA (chromated copper arsenate), creosote, and other chemical treatments. Treated lumber is labeled clearly and only sold for appropriate applications, never for food contact or indoor use.

Certified Grading

Our graders follow National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) standards. Structural lumber is assessed per ASTM guidelines. You receive documentation of grade and species with every order.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no minimum order. You can buy a single board or an entire truckload. However, our volume discounts kick in at 200 board feet, so larger orders offer better per-foot pricing. Walk-in customers are welcome to hand-select individual pieces at our yard.
We evaluate species, dimensions, condition, grade, nail content, and current market demand. We base our offers on real market data and aim to pay fair wholesale prices. Rare species like old-growth redwood or black walnut command higher prices. We provide a written assessment explaining how we arrived at our offer.
Yes, we offer pickup service across Greater Los Angeles. Pickup is free for quantities over 500 board feet within our core service area. For smaller quantities or locations outside our core area, we charge a modest transportation fee based on distance and accessibility. You can also drop off lumber at our yard during business hours at no charge.
For selling, we can often provide a preliminary estimate within a few hours based on photos and description. An on-site assessment for larger lots can usually be scheduled within 1-2 business days. For buying, we provide quotes same-day for in-stock inventory and within 48 hours for custom sourcing requests.
Absolutely. Our yard is open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday from 8 AM to 2 PM. Walk-ins are welcome, but we recommend calling ahead for large orders so we can have your materials pulled and ready. Our staff is available to help you find the right pieces for your project.
Yes, we buy lumber in as-is condition, including pieces with nails, screws, and other fasteners. Denailing is part of our standard processing. However, heavily contaminated wood with excessive hardware may be valued lower since it requires more processing time. We handle all the cleanup.
Currently, the highest demand is for reclaimed white oak (flooring and furniture), old-growth Douglas fir (exposed beams and mantels), heart pine (flooring), and black walnut (furniture and countertops). Barn wood and weathered siding are also consistently popular for accent walls and commercial interiors.
We guarantee the species and grade of all lumber we sell. Structural lumber comes with a certification of its grade and load-bearing capacity. If you receive material that does not match its described grade or species, we will replace it or issue a full refund. Kiln-dried material is guaranteed to the specified moisture content at the time of delivery.
Yes. Our Custom Sourcing service taps into a network of demolition contractors, salvage yards, and reclaimed wood suppliers across the country. We can locate specific species, dimensions, ages, and character profiles. Lead times for custom sourcing typically range from 2-6 weeks depending on rarity.
For purchases, we accept cash, checks, credit cards, wire transfers, and ACH. Contractor accounts with approved credit can use Net-30 terms. For sales to us, we pay by company check (mailed within 48 hours of pickup) or wire transfer for amounts over $5,000.
