The Founder's Story
Rafael Cortez grew up in his grandfather's woodshop in East Los Angeles, where he learned to see the beauty and potential in every piece of timber. His abuelo, a cabinetmaker who emigrated from Oaxaca in the 1960s, taught him that good wood tells a story - the rings record years of sun and rain, the grain reveals the tree's character, and the patina speaks to the hands that shaped it.
After earning a degree in Environmental Science from UCLA and spending five years working in urban forestry management, Rafael found himself at a crossroads. In 2014, while consulting on a demolition project in Downtown LA, he watched a crew feed thousands of board feet of century-old Douglas fir and heart pine into a dumpster bound for the Puente Hills landfill. The wood was from original joists, beams, and flooring of a 1912 warehouse - tight-grained old-growth lumber that simply does not exist in new-growth forests today.
“I stood there watching this incredible material being destroyed, and something just clicked,” Rafael recalls. “I thought about my grandfather, who would have wept to see wood like that thrown away. I thought about the forests we're cutting down to make new lumber that isn't half as good. And I thought: somebody needs to stop this. Why not me?”
Rafael emptied his savings, borrowed a truck, and convinced the demolition foreman to let him take the wood instead of sending it to the dump. He stored it in a rented warehouse, spent weekends denailing and sorting, and began selling to local woodworkers and furniture makers. Within three months, he had more demand than he could fill. Los Angeles Lumber was born.
A decade later, that impulse to rescue beautiful wood from destruction has grown into the largest reclaimed lumber operation in Greater Los Angeles. But Rafael still personally inspects salvage sites, still gets excited when his team uncovers a cache of rare old-growth timber, and still keeps a piece of that original 1912 Douglas fir on his desk as a reminder of why he started.

Our Timeline
Every milestone represents lumber saved, communities served, and a step closer to our vision of a construction industry that wastes nothing.
The Beginning
Rafael Cortez signs the lease on a 3,000 sq ft warehouse on Palmetto Street in South LA. Armed with a pickup truck, a crowbar, and a deep conviction that beautiful old-growth lumber deserves better than a landfill, he begins pulling usable wood from demolition sites across the city. In the first month, he rescues 2,400 board feet of Douglas fir from a condemned 1920s bungalow in Boyle Heights.
First Customer
A local furniture maker named David Chen discovers Rafael's warehouse through a Craigslist post. He purchases 300 board feet of reclaimed heart pine and builds a dining table that wins Best in Show at the LA Maker Faire. David becomes our first repeat customer and remains a loyal partner to this day.
The Team Takes Shape
Rafael hires Kwame Asante, a master miller with 20 years of experience at hardwood mills in Ghana and Oregon. Together they invest in a used Wood-Mizer sawmill and a 24-inch planer, allowing them to process rough salvaged timbers into dimensional lumber. By year's end, the two-man team is processing 4,000 board feet per month.
First Architect Partnership
Architect Sofia Reyes specifies reclaimed redwood from LA Lumber for a boutique hotel renovation in Silver Lake. The project receives coverage in Dwell magazine and introduces the company to LA's design community. Orders from architects and interior designers increase 300% over the next six months.
Growing Roots
Demand for sustainable building materials explodes across Los Angeles. We expand into a 12,000 sq ft facility in Vernon with a dedicated milling floor, kiln-drying room, and customer showroom. The team grows to eight full-time employees. We invest in professional milling equipment including a TimberKing 2000 and industrial-grade denailing stations to process reclaimed wood at scale.
First 100,000 Board Feet
In November 2017, we hit a landmark milestone: 100,000 cumulative board feet of reclaimed lumber processed and sold. The number represents roughly 200 mature trees that didn't need to be cut down. We celebrate with an open house that draws over 150 attendees from the local building and design community.
Community Impact Begins
We formalize our partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, committing to donate 5,000 board feet of reclaimed lumber annually for affordable housing builds. We also launch our Community Builds program, supplying discounted materials and volunteer labor to neighborhood improvement projects in Watts, Compton, and East LA.
Anya Petrova Joins
Anya Petrova comes aboard as Head of Operations, bringing 15 years of supply chain expertise from her previous role at a national building materials distributor. She immediately streamlines our sourcing network, establishing relationships with 30+ demolition contractors across LA, Orange, and Ventura counties.
The Brewery Project
LA Lumber wins the contract to supply 40,000 board feet of reclaimed white oak and longleaf pine for Angel City Brewery's new taproom expansion in the Arts District. It is our largest single project to date and showcases the dramatic beauty of century-old reclaimed wood on a commercial scale. The project is featured in Architectural Digest's "Best New Bars in America" list.
Sustainability Certification
Mei-Lin Tao joins as Sustainability Director and leads the effort to earn our first Rediscovered Wood Certification from the Rainforest Alliance. We also implement a comprehensive chain-of-custody tracking system, allowing every piece of lumber to be traced back to its source building and demolition project.
Going Green Fleet
Transitioned our entire delivery fleet of six trucks to hybrid vehicles and installed a 45kW solar array at our processing facility, reducing our operational carbon footprint by 60%. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, we adapt quickly by launching online ordering, curbside pickup, and virtual wood selection consultations.
Pandemic Pivot
With homeowners embarking on renovation projects during lockdown, demand for reclaimed wood surges. We launch our DIY Packs - curated bundles of reclaimed lumber for shelving, accent walls, and furniture projects. The program brings in over 800 new residential customers in its first year and introduces a new generation to the beauty of reclaimed wood.
Facility Expansion
We break ground on a major expansion, doubling our Vernon facility to 24,000 sq ft with a state-of-the-art milling floor, climate-controlled drying rooms, a dedicated finishing shop, and a 3,000 sq ft customer experience showroom. The expansion allows us to process 50,000 board feet per month and stock over 20 species of reclaimed wood.
Workforce Development Launch
In partnership with LA Trade Technical College and the LA County Workforce Development Board, we launch our Timber Trades Apprenticeship Program. The 12-month program trains unemployed and underemployed adults in lumber grading, milling, woodworking, and sustainable forestry practices. The inaugural class graduates 14 apprentices, with 11 receiving full-time job offers.
Innovation Hub
Launched our custom milling service, allowing architects and builders to specify exact dimensions, finishes, and profiles for their reclaimed lumber orders. We also open our doors to walk-in customers, DIY enthusiasts, and weekend woodworkers. Our showroom becomes a destination, hosting monthly workshops on topics from live-edge slab finishing to Japanese joinery.
Award Recognition
LA Lumber receives the Los Angeles Business Journal's Green Business of the Year award and is named to the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America. Rafael Cortez is profiled in the LA Times business section under the headline "The Man Saving LA's Lumber, One Building at a Time."
Regional Partnerships
We sign long-term supply agreements with three of LA's largest general contractors, guaranteeing a steady stream of demolition lumber from major redevelopment projects. We also partner with the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety to pilot a Deconstruction Ordinance, requiring selective salvage on certain demolition permits.
Film & Television Division
Recognizing the demand from Hollywood, we launch a dedicated Film & TV division, supplying reclaimed wood for set construction, prop fabrication, and production design. Within six months, we provide materials to 25 film and television productions, including two major studio features. Our wood appears on screen in living rooms, saloons, and starships alike.
Leading the Way
Became the largest reclaimed lumber supplier in Greater Los Angeles, processing over 500,000 board feet of salvaged wood annually and diverting over 3,000 tons of material from landfills. Our team has grown to 52 full-time employees, and we serve over 2,000 customers per year ranging from individual hobbyists to Fortune 500 companies.
Buy-Back Program
We launch our pioneering Lumber Buy-Back Program, offering to repurchase reclaimed wood from customers who no longer need it. The program closes the loop on our circular economy model and ensures that the wood we rescue continues to find new life indefinitely. In the first quarter alone, we buy back 8,000 board feet from 45 customers.
Second Location & Looking Ahead
We open our second facility in the San Fernando Valley, a 15,000 sq ft operation in Sun Valley dedicated to serving contractors and builders in the northern half of the metro area. With two locations, a fleet of eight delivery vehicles, and a team that shares a fierce commitment to sustainability, we look ahead to the next decade of rescuing, renewing, and redistributing the lumber that built Los Angeles.

What Drives Us
Environmental Stewardship
Every decision we make considers its environmental impact. We exist to reduce waste and promote the circular economy of building materials. Since 2015, we have diverted over 15,000 tons of usable lumber from landfills and saved the equivalent of 12,000 mature trees from being harvested.
Community First
We believe in supporting the communities we serve. From affordable materials for Habitat builds to job training for underemployed adults, LA Lumber invests in local prosperity. We donate 5% of annual revenue to community housing and education programs across Los Angeles County.
Quality Without Compromise
Reclaimed doesn't mean inferior. We grade, process, and prepare every piece of lumber to meet or exceed industry standards. Our six-point inspection process, kiln-drying protocol, and satisfaction guarantee ensure that the reclaimed wood you receive is structurally sound, dimensionally accurate, and stunningly beautiful.
Looking Ahead
As we enter our second decade, we are more committed than ever to our founding mission: rescue beautiful lumber, keep it out of landfills, and put it to work in the buildings and homes of Los Angeles. Our roadmap includes expanding to a third facility on the Westside, launching a digital marketplace for reclaimed wood, and doubling our apprenticeship program to train 30 new timber professionals per year.
We are also working toward carbon-negative operations by 2028. Through a combination of expanded solar generation, electric vehicle fleet conversion, and partnerships with carbon offset programs, we aim to sequester more carbon in the reclaimed wood we save than our operations produce. Because for us, sustainability is not a marketing slogan - it is the reason we exist.
Rafael still says it best: “Every piece of reclaimed wood has a story. Our job is to make sure that story keeps going.”
