Installation Guides
Step-by-step instructions for using our most popular accessories on reclaimed wood projects.
Installing Hidden Deck Fasteners on Reclaimed Boards
Inspect each reclaimed board for straightness, checking for twist and bow. Boards with more than 1/4" deviation per 8 feet should be ripped to narrower widths or set aside.
Run a metal detector along the full length of every board. Remove all embedded nails, screws, and staples that could damage saw blades or impede fastener installation.
Dry-fit the first three rows before securing anything. This lets you establish your pattern and identify any boards that need trimming.
Install the first board face-screwed at the house wall (the screw heads will be covered by the fascia or threshold). Use two stainless screws per joist.
Slide a hidden clip onto the board edge and screw it into the joist. Place one clip per joist crossing. Tap the next board into the clip with a rubber mallet.
Check alignment every third row using a string line. Reclaimed boards may have slight width variation, so minor adjustments keep the overall layout straight.
At the final board, face-screw again (this edge is typically covered by fascia). Countersink screws and fill with color-matched exterior wood filler.
Applying Natural Oil Finish to Reclaimed Hardwood
Sand the surface progressively: 80 grit to remove rough spots, 120 grit for overall smoothing, 150 grit for final surface prep. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
Raise the grain by wiping the surface with a slightly damp cloth. Let it dry for 2 hours, then lightly sand with 220 grit to knock down the raised fibers.
Vacuum all dust from the surface, then wipe with a tack cloth. Any remaining dust particles will become trapped under the oil and appear as bumps.
Apply a generous flood coat of penetrating oil using a natural-bristle brush or lint-free rag. Work in manageable sections of 10-15 square feet.
Allow the oil to penetrate for 15-20 minutes. Return to the starting point and wipe off all excess oil with clean lint-free rags. No standing oil should remain.
Let the first coat cure for 12-24 hours (temperature dependent). Apply a second coat following the same flood-and-wipe technique.
For high-traffic surfaces like countertops and tabletops, apply a third coat after another 24-hour cure. Buff lightly with 0000 steel wool between coats for maximum smoothness.
Mounting Reclaimed Wood Shelves with Iron Brackets
Locate wall studs using a stud finder. For maximum load capacity, always mount at least one bracket directly into a stud. Use toggle bolts rated for your expected load for any bracket not on a stud.
Mark bracket locations on the wall using a level. For shelves over 36" long, use a minimum of two brackets. Add a third bracket for shelves over 60" to prevent sagging.
Pre-drill pilot holes through the bracket mounting holes into the wall. For stud mounting, use a 1/8" bit. For drywall anchors, follow the anchor manufacturer sizing.
Secure brackets to the wall using appropriate fasteners. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten, which could strip the stud or damage the anchor.
Set the reclaimed board on top of the brackets. Check for level and adjust bracket placement if needed before marking screw holes on the underside of the shelf.
Secure the shelf to the brackets using the provided screws from below. Pre-drill to avoid splitting, especially with old-growth reclaimed wood which can be very hard and brittle.

Care & Maintenance Tips
Get the most out of your accessories with proper care, storage, and maintenance practices.
Storing Finishes and Sealers
Keep all liquid finishes in a cool, dry location between 50-80 degrees F. Tightly seal containers after each use to prevent skinning. Water-based products will be ruined if they freeze. Oil-based finishes can develop a skin on the surface - lay plastic wrap directly on the liquid surface before sealing the lid to minimize air contact.
Caring for Reclaimed Iron Hardware
Wipe reclaimed iron brackets and hardware with a dry cloth monthly to remove dust. If installed outdoors, apply a light coat of paste wax twice yearly to slow natural oxidation. Minor surface rust can be removed with 0000 steel wool and re-sealed with clear lacquer spray. Avoid using water or household cleaners on uncoated iron.
Maintaining Fastener Integrity
Inspect structural fasteners annually for signs of corrosion, loosening, or wood shrinkage around the connection. Reclaimed lumber may continue to adjust to its new environment for 1-2 years after installation, so re-torquing structural screws at the 6-month and 12-month marks is recommended.
Tool Maintenance for Reclaimed Wood Work
Saw blades and planer knives used on reclaimed wood dull faster due to embedded minerals and dirt. Sharpen or replace blades twice as often as you would for new lumber. Clean metal detector sensors with a soft cloth before each use. Calibrate moisture meters annually for accurate readings.
Extending the Life of Natural Oil Finishes
Oil-finished reclaimed wood surfaces benefit from periodic refreshing. For furniture and countertops, apply a thin maintenance coat of oil every 6-12 months, or whenever the wood begins to look dry. For floors, high-traffic areas may need refreshing every 3-6 months while low-traffic areas can go 12-18 months between coats.
Preventing Finish Failures on Reclaimed Wood
The most common cause of finish failure on reclaimed wood is inadequate surface preparation. Old finishes, dirt, wax, and mineral deposits must be completely removed before applying new finishes. Always test your finish on an inconspicuous area first. Some reclaimed woods contain tannins or oils that can react with certain finishes, causing discoloration or poor adhesion.

Do you carry Simpson Strong-Tie products?
Yes, we stock a comprehensive selection of Simpson Strong-Tie structural connectors, including post bases, post caps, joist hangers, angle brackets, hurricane ties, and hold-downs. We carry connectors sized for standard dimensional lumber as well as larger timber frame sizes (4x4, 4x6, 6x6, 6x8). If we do not have a specific Simpson product in stock, we can typically order it within 2-3 business days.
What finishes do you recommend for reclaimed wood used indoors?
For indoor reclaimed wood projects, we generally recommend natural penetrating oils (tung oil or hardwax oil) because they enhance the natural grain and patina without creating a plastic-looking film. For dining tables and food prep surfaces, our beeswax wood butter or food-grade mineral oil is ideal. For flooring, a hardwax oil provides excellent durability with a natural look. Milk paint is perfect for a vintage painted finish. We are always happy to make samples on your specific wood so you can compare options before committing.
Are your stainless steel fasteners compatible with ACQ-treated lumber?
Yes. All of our stainless steel fasteners are 304 or 316 grade, both of which are fully compatible with ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) treated lumber. Standard galvanized fasteners can corrode when used with ACQ-treated wood due to the copper content in the preservative. We strongly recommend stainless steel or our ceramic-coated structural screws for any application involving treated lumber.
How do I choose the right finish for an outdoor reclaimed wood project?
For outdoor use, the most important factors are UV resistance and moisture protection. Our UV-resistant exterior wood sealer is our top recommendation - it protects against Southern California sun damage while letting the wood breathe. If you want to add color, apply our zero-VOC exterior wood stain first, then topcoat with the UV sealer. For ground-contact or high-moisture applications, pre-treat with our bio-based wood preservative before applying any topcoat finish.
Can I return unused accessories?
Unused, unopened accessories can be returned within 30 days with receipt for a full refund. Opened finish and sealer products can be returned if more than 75% remains, subject to a 15% restocking fee. Custom-mixed finishes and special-order items are non-returnable. Defective products are replaced at no charge regardless of use.
Do you offer contractor accounts for accessories?
Absolutely. Our contractor accounts provide 10-20% discounts on all accessories and hardware depending on volume, net-30 payment terms (upon credit approval), priority same-day order fulfillment, and a dedicated account representative. We can also set up jobsite deliveries bundled with your lumber orders. Apply in store or contact us to set up an account.
How do I know which structural hardware I need for my project?
Structural hardware selection depends on the loads involved, the lumber dimensions, and local building codes. We recommend consulting with a structural engineer or your building department for load-bearing connections. However, our staff has extensive experience with timber construction and can help you identify the right Simpson Strong-Tie connectors, structural screws, and fastening methods for common residential applications. Bring your plans and we will walk through the connections with you.
Do your eco-friendly finishes perform as well as conventional products?
In most applications, yes. Modern zero-VOC and bio-based finishes have come a very long way in the last decade. Our penetrating oils actually outperform film-building polyurethanes in many respects - they are easier to apply, easier to repair, and they allow the wood to breathe naturally. The main trade-off is recoat frequency: oil finishes on high-traffic surfaces may need refreshing every 6-12 months, whereas a high-build polyurethane might last 3-5 years. For most customers, the ease of maintenance and superior aesthetics of natural finishes more than compensate.
