58 People, One Mission

Behind every piece of reclaimed lumber we sell is a team of dedicated professionals who believe that beautiful wood deserves a second life. From our founder who started pulling boards out of dumpsters in 2015 to our newest apprentice learning the craft today, everyone at LA Lumber shares a passion for sustainability, quality, and community.

Our team spans eight departments and includes master millers from Ghana, environmental scientists from Stanford, architects from Italy, Marine Corps veterans, former teachers, and graduates of our own apprenticeship program. What unites us is a shared conviction that the construction industry can do better - and that reclaimed lumber is a big part of the answer.

Executive Leadership

Rafael Cortez

Founder & CEO

A lifelong woodworker and environmental advocate, Rafael founded LA Lumber after witnessing tons of beautiful lumber being sent to landfills during LA renovation projects. He grew up in his grandfather's woodshop in East Los Angeles, where he fell in love with the craft of working with wood. After earning a degree in Environmental Science from UCLA, Rafael spent five years in urban forestry management before launching LA Lumber in 2015 with nothing more than a pickup truck, a crowbar, and an unshakable conviction that good wood deserves better than a landfill. Under his leadership, the company has grown from a one-person salvage operation to the largest reclaimed lumber supplier in Greater Los Angeles. Rafael still personally visits salvage sites, inspects high-value reclaimed timber, and mentors every apprentice who comes through the program. He serves on the boards of the Deconstruction & Reuse Network, TreePeople Los Angeles, and the LA County Workforce Development Board.

Anya Petrova

Head of Operations

With 15 years in logistics and supply chain management, Anya ensures our reclamation and delivery operations run like clockwork. Before joining LA Lumber in 2018, she managed distribution operations for a national building materials company, overseeing 12 warehouses across the Western United States. Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, Anya immigrated to Los Angeles at age 14 and worked her way through Cal State LA while holding down two jobs. She brings that same relentless work ethic to LA Lumber, where she has built a sourcing network of over 60 demolition contractors, construction companies, and municipal partners across LA, Orange, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties. Anya oversees our fleet of eight delivery vehicles, our two processing facilities, and a logistics team of 12 who coordinate pickups, deliveries, and inventory management. She recently led the expansion to our second facility in Sun Valley and is currently managing the transition to an all-electric delivery fleet.

Kwame Asante

Master Miller & Production Director

Kwame brings decades of milling experience to our shop. He can assess and process any piece of reclaimed wood to bring out its best qualities. Kwame began his woodworking career in Kumasi, Ghana, where he apprenticed under master furniture makers as a teenager. He later worked at industrial hardwood mills in both Ghana and Oregon, developing an encyclopedic knowledge of wood species, grain patterns, and milling techniques. He joined LA Lumber in 2016 as one of the company's first hires and has built our milling operation from a single used Wood-Mizer to a state-of-the-art production floor with six workstations, two kilns, and a finishing shop. Kwame personally trains every new miller and apprentice, and his quality standards are legendary among the team. He holds certifications from the National Hardwood Lumber Association and the Woodwork Career Alliance, and he can identify over 200 wood species by sight and touch. His favorite reclaimed species? Old-growth longleaf pine: "Nothing else has that density, that amber color, that story."

Quality Assurance

Priya Sharma

Quality Control Lead

Priya inspects every piece of lumber that enters and leaves our facility. Her eagle eye ensures only the best reclaimed wood reaches our customers. Priya spent 10 years as a materials testing engineer at a civil engineering firm in Mumbai before immigrating to the US in 2017. Her background in structural analysis and materials science makes her uniquely qualified to assess the integrity of reclaimed timber, which can carry hidden defects from decades of service. Priya developed LA Lumber's six-point inspection protocol, which checks for structural integrity, moisture content, metal contamination, insect damage, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality. She trains all quality control staff and conducts random audits of finished orders before they ship. Under her leadership, our customer complaint rate has dropped to under 2%, and our return rate is below 0.5%. Priya also manages our grading system, which categorizes reclaimed lumber into structural, architectural, and craft grades to ensure every piece finds its ideal application.

Our Culture

What makes LA Lumber a great place to work is not just what we do - it is how we do it. These are the values that shape our daily experience as a team.

Craftsmanship Runs Deep

We are a team of people who love working with wood. Whether you are a 30-year veteran miller or a first-year apprentice, the satisfaction of transforming a rough salvaged beam into a beautiful, usable piece of lumber never gets old. We invest in tools, training, and time so our team can do their best work.

Everyone Teaches, Everyone Learns

Knowledge sharing is central to our culture. Kwame teaches milling techniques to apprentices. Apprentices teach the office staff about wood species. Mei-Lin teaches everyone about sustainability metrics. We hold monthly "lunch and learn" sessions where team members share skills and knowledge across departments.

Safety Is Non-Negotiable

Working with reclaimed lumber involves heavy machinery, embedded metal, and unpredictable materials. We maintain a rigorous safety program with regular training, equipment inspections, and a culture where anyone can stop work if they see a hazard. Our incident rate is 60% below the industry average for wood processing facilities.

Diversity Makes Us Stronger

Our team includes people from Ghana, Ukraine, India, Italy, Nigeria, Mexico, and communities across Los Angeles. We speak English, Spanish, Twi, Italian, Hindi, and Ukrainian in our facilities. This diversity of background and perspective makes us better problem-solvers, more creative, and more connected to the communities we serve.

Sustainability Starts at Home

We don't just sell sustainable materials - we practice sustainability in everything we do. Our break rooms use compostable supplies. Our facilities run on solar power. Our team carpool program reduces commute emissions. And we challenge every department to find new ways to reduce waste and increase efficiency.

We Celebrate Wins

From hitting board-feet milestones to apprenticeship graduations to customer thank-you notes, we make time to acknowledge achievements as a team. Monthly team lunches, annual company retreats, and our tradition of ringing the "Timber Bell" when we complete a major project keep morale high and the team connected.

Team Achievements

The accomplishments that we are most proud of as a team - because none of this would be possible without every single person pulling in the same direction.

Zero Lost-Time Incidents

Our production team achieved 18 consecutive months without a lost-time safety incident in 2023-2024, earning recognition from Cal/OSHA.

98% Customer Satisfaction

Our quality control and sales teams have maintained a 98%+ customer satisfaction rate every year since 2019, based on post-purchase surveys.

85% Apprentice Job Placement

Our education team has placed 85% of apprenticeship graduates into full-time positions in the construction and woodworking industries.

500K Board Feet Milestone

In 2024, our production team processed over 500,000 board feet of reclaimed lumber - a company record achieved through efficiency improvements and expanded capacity.

Inc. 5000 Recognition

Our entire team contributed to the growth that earned LA Lumber a spot on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America.

45K Instagram Followers

Our marketing team grew our social media presence to over 45,000 Instagram followers through authentic storytelling about reclaimed wood and the people who work with it.

Promoted to manager in 2022, Tomás now oversees both facilities and a team of eight.
